In January 2016, I embarked on a First Nation, Metis, and Inuit collaborative inquiry with my Primary school team. A selection of Primary staff at Northern Lights Public School were just one of the many York Region District School Board school collaborative inquiry teams involved in the project. At Northern Lights, we considered how deepening our learning about appropriate, diverse, contemporary FNMI perspectives, resources and effective practices can support student intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect. Our journey took us on a path that integrated rich FNMI language resources into our everyday classroom experiences. We focused in on an oral language outcome yet our inquiry did what all great inquiries will do, it led us into unanticipated terrain and we quickly identified the myriad of curriculum connections that could be made.
